Untitled 1, Heroine Under Construction Series, Edition of 3, 2016 , Photograph, 73.4 x 59.1 inches

Mariu Palacios's photographs link her personal history to her great grand-uncle, Enrique Palacios', history as a Peruvian war hero in the late 1800s. Both lived in Peru during war and uncertain times. In order to explore the themes of heroism and what it means to be human, Palacios has fictionalized her great grand-uncles' life by creating a love story between him and a woman he met in New Orleans while in Louisiana buying war ships. Her photographs depict a woman who embodies her relatives' traits, such as courage and sacrifice, while questioning what it means to have a life with or without meaning.
