Joel Bigaignon uses unconventional materials and techniques to transform canvas into spontaneous narratives derived from his youth. Born in Mauritius to African/Indian and European parents, Bigaignon pulls from his cultural roots in discussing themes of colonialism and its impact on the history, people, politics and religion of a region. Paper collage, oil stick and acrylic paint all make appearances in Bigaignon’s portfolio, reflective of the fantastical limitlessness of childlike wonder.
