Ana Barriga (b. 1984, Spain) received her BFA in 2014 and MFA in 2015 from the University of Seville and currently lives and works in Madrid. Driven by a childlike energy, Barriga focuses on the recontextualization of imagery that is aesthetically playful or cute through her own search for the balance between emotion and reason. She eloquently punctuates her canvases with a sense of freedom, intuition, and unpredictability of outcome, mixing structured backgrounds and characters with free-forming lines, eclectic iconography, intense light, and even resurrected toys. A master of mixed media, Barriga’s creative process often involves the discovery of ceramics, porcelain, and other objects at flea markets which she then transforms to construct new narratives that challenge the limitations of our imaginations. Through the infusion of sarcasm, irony, humor, and an inspired playfulness, she manipulates the inert and obsolete imagery of these disregarded objects into expressively colorful and lively figures that confidently remove the seriousness from important transcendental themes.
