Yes I Am Still Here, 2021 , Charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 54 x 48 inches

For Atanda Adebayo painting is a journey of self-discovery and realization that allows him to acknowledge the past and project himself towards the future. Born in the ancient coastal city of Badagry, on the outskirsts of Lagos, Nigeria, once an important geographical crossroads in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, Adebayo's work reflect the areas' brutal colonial past. The figures that populate his paintings represent the unbroken men and women who burst with color and hope, despite the adversity in their lives. Portrayed in elegant poses, their facial expressions embody empowered vulnerability as well as bliss among struggle.
