Jean-Michel Basquiat operates somewhere between scribbles and hieroglyphics, Abstract Expressionism and graffiti. Born in Brooklyn in 1960 to a half black, half Puerto Rican mother and a Haitian father, Basquiat developed an artistic language of his own, inscribing his jumbled up canvases with personal mythologies and universal histories in jagged lines and bold colors. Although he died tragically of an overdose at only 27 years old, Basquiat remains one of the most influential and legendary artists in contemporary culture. His artwork eternally rejects a clean reading; it cannot be understood, only experienced.
