Allouche Gallery Los Angeles presents Frank Coffie’s debut solo exhibition, Connecting Lines, featuring portraits of oil paint, plastic, and yarn on linen. Conceptually, Coffie has explored the idea of belonging through his representation of bodies in fleeting, almost dream-like spaces. He is working through the ideas of positivity and opportunity. When asked about what he strives to convey in this current body of work, Coffie states, “I want the viewer to feel strength in a moment of defeat… a positive side to a negative moment.” The idea of strength in defeat comes through strongly in his portraiture. Referencing iconic imagery such as Michelangelo’s Pieta, his piece Floral Console re-frames the evocation of loss between parent and child. Instead, he suggests a moment of newness, of opportunity, a moment to reflect. Perhaps there’s a moment of peace, a possibility of life instead of loss – a lens in which he views his own experiences.
